Rep. Donald Payne Jr., D-N.J., has died at the age of 65 after several weeks of being hospitalized following a "cardiac episode" in early April. The case against Donald Trump in Georgia for allegedly participating in a criminal conspiracy to interfere with the 2020 election is more important than any individual actor managing the prosecution, and that includes the Fulton County district attorney, Fani Willis, and the case’s lead prosecutor, Nathan Wade. In recent weeks, Ms. Willis and Mr. Wade have found themselves in a spotlight that should belong to the serious charges against Mr. Trump. The two are the focus of a legal motion, and ensuing news reporting about a possible romantic relationship between them has explored whether it amounts to a conflict of interest with regard to the case. I’m a law professor in Georgia who teaches ethics and who has studied the legal consequences that might come if Ms. Willis and Mr. Wade are found to have a conflict, and I believe the judicious and farsighted course would be for Ms. Willis to take a personal leave of absence and turn over control of the district attorney’s office, and the case against Mr. Trump, to a career deputy district attorney. Doing so would be an act of public service by Ms. Willis — and more important, offers the best option for keeping the criminal case on track and holding Mr. Trump and his co-defendants accountable for their actions in the 2020 election if that is the just outcome.

The case came to the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) after an employee of the eastern Belgian municipality of Ans was told she could not wear an Islamic head scarf at work. The municipality subsequently changed its terms of employment to require its employees to observe strict neutrality by not wearing overt signs of religious or ideological belief. The hijab, the traditional head scarf worn around the head and shoulders, has been a divisive issue across Europe for years. The CJEU said a policy of strict neutrality that was intended to establish a neutral administrative environment may be regarded as being objectively justified by a legitimate aim. The court said authorities in member states had a margin of discretion in designing the neutrality of public service they intended to promote.

Robert Crimo Jr., the father of the man accused of killing seven people at a Fourth of July parade in suburban Chicago, pleaded guilty on Monday to seven counts of misdemeanor reckless conduct for helping his son obtain a license to own firearms before the shootings. The guilty pleas were announced in a courtroom in Lake County, Ill., just before the elder Mr. Crimo’s trial was expected to begin. Eric F. Rinehart, the top prosecutor in Lake County, said the deal had been reached after last-minute discussions on Sunday. Under the terms of the agreement, Mr. Crimo will serve 60 days in jail, two years probation and 100 hours of public service, prosecutors said. Mr. Crimo declined to comment immediately after leaving the courtroom.
